Why measure a website's carbon footprint
The internet accounts for around 4% of global CO2 emissions, more than civil aviation. Every web page loaded consumes energy: servers, networks, the user's device. A heavy page doesn't just hurt your performance score, it emits needlessly.
The good news: a light page is always a fast page. Optimising your carbon footprint and optimising your Core Web Vitals is often the same work. Trakup measures both and shows you the link between resource weight, load speed and environmental impact.
Trakup uses the Website Carbon v4 methodology, the industry reference standard, which calculates the footprint from the real weight of downloaded resources (HTML, CSS, JS, images, fonts) and the average energy mix of the global network.

How Trakup measures carbon footprint
During each page scan, Trakup downloads the real resources from your URL: HTML and CSS (up to 15 files), JavaScript (up to 20), images (up to 15), fonts (up to 5). The total weight in kilobytes is measured precisely, with no estimation or approximation.
This weight is converted into grams of CO2 equivalent using the Website Carbon v4 methodology, which accounts for the energy consumption of data centres, transmission networks and end-user devices. The A+ to F grade and the global percentile are calculated from this value.
